The Art of Boro
At SoulStitch Artwear, we embrace the Japanese philosophy of Wabi-sabi which is centred on acceptance of transience and imperfection in traditional Japenese aesthetics. Boro, where repair is not an ending but a new beginning sits well within this philosophy. Boro, meaning "rags," celebrates the beauty of mended textiles, transforming them into stronger, more beautiful pieces through intricate stitchwork.
In our current culture, the speed of letting things go is too fast as replacements are instantly available. Boro refers to cloth which doesn't accept a tear as the end, but means repair in order to survive . It originated in Northern Japan where harsh weather meant that it was necessary for clothing to protect from the elements. When repaired with patches and sewn with small, repeated stitch patterns, known as Sashiko, the clothing became thicker, stronger and more beautiful.
